The theory being you can turn a larger piece near the head stock but the gap is so short that it would only be useful for turning plates or platters.

the 3400 is a very common old lathe, a little crude by modern standards but bullet proof. post a pic of it, then we can help. the 3400 came as a 4 speed with matching pullies for the motor and headstock requiring a 1/2 to 1hp 1725 rpm motor. mine has a 3/4 hp which is plenty for lots of turning and another 2 speed reduction setup for larger bowls.Mar 27, 2012 ...
